Fundraising for your gap year

Posted on the 27th September 2018

Consider fundraising initiatives as part of your plan to get overseas on your gap year – it can be easier and more lucrative than you think!

As a not-for-profit youth development organisation, Lattitude does it’s best to provide international programming at an affordable price without compromising on quality. However, volunteering overseas still has a substantial price tag attached. Fundraising is a great way to get involved in and prepare for your overseas volunteering experience. And it allows you to develop valuable new skills at the same time. We’ve put together a list of interesting and achievable ways you can raise money for your gap year.

Sponsored Events

Many Lattitude volunteers undertake sponsored challenges to raise money for their placements. Try thinking of something that will challenge you personally and encourage others to donate, such as a sponsored run. A fun idea is linking your sponsored event with something to do with the country you’re going to!

Big night in

Invite your friends and family over to your house for a meal/drinks/a film and ask them to donate whatever they would normally pay for a night out! You could even cook food from the country you’ll be living in or watch a film set in that particular location.

Contact community groups

Approaching local community groups, church groups, or youth groups can be a very successful way of raising money or receiving support for your placement. By offering to hold a presentation about Lattitude and your placement, you can secure a donation as well as raise awareness of what we do as a charity!

Think about making some extra cash from selling items that you won’t be needing during your Gap Year. EBay, Craigslist and even garage sales are great for selling old clothes, electronics and other items!

Odd Jobs

To raise some extra money why not turn your hand to gardening, car washing, nail painting, dog walking, lawn mowing, window washing, tutoring – whatever you’re good at! A donation here and there adds up!

This is a great thing to do if you are going to be volunteering in a placement that helps people from disadvantaged backgrounds, or if you’ll be going to a developing country. Challenge yourself to live on $5 per day for 5 days to raise awareness of global poverty. Ask people to sponsor you, and donate the money you would have spent on an average week to your fundraising target!

This is just a bit of a teaser to get you all thinking about fundraising. We have heaps more suggestions on our fundraising page.

Raising money can be tough, but if you plan your fundraising ideas in advance and stick at it, you’ll reach your target in no time!
