Lattitude Gap Year Australia – Orientation in Melbourne

Posted on the 26th February 2020

Lattitude Gap Year Australia! Since our latest cohort just arrived in Melbourne, we’ll say: Wominjeka yearmann koondee biik Wurundjeri balluk – Welcome to the land of the Wurundjeri people.

For our volunteers arriving on their Lattitude Gap Year in Australia, orientation in Melbourne is a great way to settle in, make new friends, and start the adventure! Our volunteers love having free time to get to know one another and explore Melbourne. It’s an opportunity for the volunteers to bond with one another and support each other on this amazing journey.

Recovering from jetlag is priority number one, as many of our volunteers have travelled such a long way to get to Australia. We help volunteers settle in and plan activities to allow them to get to know each other and become familiar with Australian culture. Volunteers are often surprised at what a great city Melbourne is because they never previously knew anything about it. We take our volunteers on group activities that are good bonding exercises. We have important briefings to ensure that volunteers know what to expect and have the best possible experience at placement.

During orientation we take care of all the necessities of living abroad – cell phones, bank accounts, tax file numbers and working with children checks. Volunteers are set up with all the essentials before departing Melbourne for their placements. Amidst all the business, we try to show them the best that Melbourne has to offer – historical sites and local culture. The beautiful State Library of Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria, The Melbourne Star, and Eureka Tower for a bird’s eye view are all popular destinations!
